I just found out that my HDL cholesterol is only 27, and that it should be much higher than that. I am just about 25. My doctor said there is really nothing I can do but take fish oil pills OR eat more fish and oatmeal. Isn’t there a prescription for it like lipitor. Why won’t she offer me this and say there is nothing else I can take for it?
Hi Kait20066,
There are unpleasant side effects when it comes to medication, such as muscle aches and pains with statin meds. There are several options for raising HDL levels naturally.
1. Physical Activity – Aerobic activity (jogging, swimming, biking, etc.) will raise HDL. The longer the duration of the activity, the greater the impact. If you’re not currently physically active, consult your MD before starting an exercise program.
2. Saturated and Trans Fats – Limit these unhealthy fats to raise HDL. Replace with heart healthy unsaturated fats.
3. Omega 3’s – As your physician already mentioned, adding more omega 3′s via eating more fish and fish oil supplements will boost HDL levels.
4. Dietary Fiber – While dietary fiber does not have a direct impact on HDL, it does promote a lower LDL cholesterol which may improve your Total Cholesterol to HDL ratio improves.
5. Alcohol – I’m not a big advocate of using alcohol to raise HDL, but if you already consume alcohol (1-2 drinks per day) can raise HDL levels. If you do not drink, do not start.
