I just got my cholesterol test and realized I had a very low HDL ("good cholesterol").
I would like to know how bad is to have this so low hdl (I mean from 1 to 10 how bad it is).
My blood test results are (mg/dl)
HDL: 33.1
LDL: 112.4
Non HDL: 130
Cholesterol: 163
Glucose: 95
I am assuming that all these are from a fasted sample.
Most disease risks have up until now been calculated by looked at total cholesterol. At 163 your in excellent, below 200 is the desirable level. However your LDL is too high and your HDL is too low for ideal..More recently it has been decided that Cholesterol HDL ratios are a better guide. Optimum is less than 5, your is 4.9 which is mediocre certainly.
To improve these results reduce animal fats, increase omega 3 intake and most of all take regular vigorous exercise. Minimum would be 30 minutes of exercise that keeps your heart rate at 85% of its age maximum,(220-age in years X 85/100) 5 days a week.
