Hi Lolita,

Here are 8 steps you can take to lower cholesterol levels. Steps you take to promote a lower cholesterol will also have a positive impact on blood pressure.

1. Know your numbers

You need to know your LDL, HDL, and triglyceride levels to determine appropriate actions. The most effective way to raise HDL is not necessarily the best way to lower LDL.

2. Evaluate your lifestyle

Know risk factors you can change and those you cannot.

3. Balance your fats

Reduce unhealthy saturated fats in your diet and replace them with heart healthy unsaturated fats.

4. Be active

Physical activity lowers triglycerides and raises HDL (good) cholesterol.

5. Eliminate trans fats

Trans fats raise LDL (bad) cholesterol, lower HDL (good) cholesterol, and raise triglycerides.

6. Understand triglycerides

Triglycerides are impacted the most by your simple sugar and alcohol intake.

7. Increase dietary fiber

You need 25-35 grams of dietary fiber daily, especially soluble fiber.

8. Add omega 3 fatty acids

Omega 3 fatty acids are involved in the regulation of heart rate, blood pressure, and blood clotting.

All the best,
Lisa Nelson RD

Encourage and maybe join him in regular physical exercise for at least 30 minutes 5 times a week. Help him reduce the animal fat in his diet and increase his intake of omega 3 oils from appropriate fish. Throw away your salt cellar and make sure he is no more than his ideal weight.
References :
GP for more years than I care to remember

depends on his age and what the readings are , there is a secret dishonest campaign at the moment to get everyone onto statins and blood pressure medication and the side effects can be devastating, get his blood pressure taken away from the doctor or nurse just in case they "got it wrong"
References :
Basically, reduce sodium in his diet, he needs to lose weight if over weight, reduce alcohol consumption (don't have to exclude it completely), reduce the amount of saturated fat in the diet and exercise.

He needs to stop smoking if he smokes. Try and encourage him to eat at least 3 portions of oily fish per week too.

Sometimes life style changes are enough to make a difference but if his blood pressure and lipid levels remain high and are within treatment range (treatment threshold depends on many factors) then medication maybe indicated.
References :
Cardiac Nurse

eliminate or decrease intake of high cholesterol foods, dairy/cheese/meat, inc dietary fiber/vegetables/fruits and exercise, It'll drop it, I did, in 2 wks by treadmill/pushups/situps/ 20"/day every other day. quit smoking if you smoke. for women, same info, BCP can add stroke risk. better to manage diet, than take pills, which are not a subsitute for diet/activity changes.
Some people think they take the anti cholesterol/blood pressure meds and don't need to make changes. Doesn't work this way, goal is to be off the meds. It can be done.
Needs to change habits, even if overwt or normal wt. HBP silent killer/renal damage/stroke/heart attack. those can be irreversible/permanent damage. try American Heart Association. learn CPR
References :
Cut down saturated fat from his diet. Try not to cook with butter. And don;t get him excited too much. With a name like "lolita" that may be difficult.
