Animal products are the richest source of the saturated fats and as a result they are also the richest source of the high cholesterol as well. Egg yolks and livers are the foods to avoid high cholesterol as they are the biggest sources of the same. Food items other than animal products such as vegetables and fruits do not contain cholesterol.

Following are a few things that you should start practicing with foods to avoid with high cholesterol.

Try to avoid and replace butter with vegetable oil but avoid saturated vegetable oils like coconut oil and palm oil. You should also avoid solid fats. Use sunflower oil, canola, soybean or olive oil instead.

Replace cheese (regular Swiss, American and cheddar) with low fat cheese like partly skim mozzarella and low fat American cheese.

Cut the intake of meats that are high in fats and limit it to lean beef, veal, pork, lean beef roast, turkey breast and lean hams.

Eat fish and skinless chicken more than other meat items. Also try to have at least one meatless meal once a week. Avoid as many as commercially made food products.

Replace high fat snacks like French fries, candy bars, cashews and peanuts with low fat snacks like pretzel, carrots and fresh fruits.

Reduce the consumption of eggs, especially egg yolks to 1 to 2 per week, try egg substitutes instead. Use salad dressings that are homemade.

Avoid fast food items like hamburgers, meatloaf and cheeseburgers as they are very high in cholesterol.

Avoiding foods with high cholesterol can be a lost cause if the act is not combined with a healthy lifestyle and plenty of exercise.
