A friend told me he experience occasional pains in the chest and when they took his Lipid Profile he had high cholesterol. I wonder if this can be used as a first sign that your cholesterol is high.

Little blood could get through the narrowed blood vessel making your heart receive less oxygenated blood. When the heart or any part of the body is deprive of oxygen the first symptom will be PAIN. there a lot of other things that could be causing your chest pain though, it could be a blood clot narrowing your blood vessel and not necessarily cholesterol plaques. It could be also be an arrhythmia or an abnormal heart beat.
